Let Freedom Wring its Hands in Anguish PDF Print E-mail

Millions of people will be celebrating the Fourth of July this week with all kinds of revelries. One thing the American Constitution affords is the freedom to act like a fool. From my sarcastic vantage point, most people abuse this freedom quite regularly.

The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage once asked me when she caught me doing something rather foolish, "Are you acting like a fool?"

I gave her one of my blank stares and she thought for a moment and answered her own question. "No, I can see you're not acting. Nobody is that good of an actor."

I was not quite sure how to take it but I took it like a man. As an American citizen, I have the freedom to "take it like a man" anything my wife gives me. And, conversely, she has the freedom to give it to me. I will not say she abuses this freedom but she certainly exercises it to the fullest extent of the law. And she sure is not acting.

Just when you think people have exhausted the art of acting like a fool somebody does something that

"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good."
1 Corinthians 12:7

Some of you have been asking about the difference between apostles and disciples. In our devotional for today was a very good answer.

We sometimes confuse apostles with disciples. Disciples are learners; apostles are sent out. Jesus had many disciples, from whom He appointed twelve apostles. These He ordained pastors, (or shepherds), who also ordained pastors for the Church. But not just apostles received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Acts makes a point of telling us that others, both men and women, were among those to whom the Holy Spirit was given.

The Spirit is given for

"I thank God when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your mother."
- 2 Timothy 1:3,5

At this season of the year, our thoughts turn to the one who gave us birth. Like so many modern customs and practices, "Mother's Day" which is celebrated the second Sunday in May, dates back to a festival derived from the custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. With the coming of Christianity it soon became a worship of the mother church as a religious, holy day during Lent, when children brought special gifts to their mothers. In the US, official recognition of Mother's Day as given by Congress on May 8, 1914. The white carnation, or rose, signifying sweetness, purity and endurance, was adopted as the emblem.

Mother's Day is here and though we attach no spiritual significance to it, it is

PENTECOST SUNDAY

This is the day the LORD hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.!

Joel 2:28,29
Acts 2:1-21
John 16:5-11
Psalm 104:24-34 & 143

Today we celebrate the birth of the New Testament church. It was not something spontaneous, it was an event which had been planned by God from eternity. We celebrate the work of the third person of the Triune God, the Holy Spirit. Preceding from the Father, He is sent by the Son as the promised presence of God with us after the Ascension. Now the Spirit is at work within us to create and sustain faith in the redemptive work of our LORD, Jesus Christ. Today through the Word the Spirit takes us from Babel to Pentecost by way of the night in which Jesus was betrayed. The Spirit confronts us with our prideful arrogance and

Mothers' Universal Contribution to Society PDF Print E-mail

I was bogged down in a store aisle sorting through Mother's Day cards and having absolutely no luck. It is another Mother's Day and I was having trouble selecting the perfect Mother's Day card. I am tempted to settle for something less than perfect this year.

I was rummaging through all kinds of Mother's Day cards and not happy with any one. There were categories galore for my selection. There are cards to celebrate every aspect of motherhood a person could think of. Of course, I saw a couple categories I had never thought of before. After over a half a century of giving Mother's Day cards I am really at a standstill. I have gone Mother's Day card dry.

This year I have more Mother's Day cards to select than ever. There is my mother, of course, my mother-in-law, both of my daughters and my daughter-in-law. If this is not enough to confuse a person, not to mention driving me to the poor house, I do not know what is.

Because all of these women in my life are connected to each other, and always compare notes, it is impossible to
