In this week's news a fifteen year old Calgary Alberta girl gave birth in her bedroom while her siblings watched TV. She put the baby in a trash bag at the curb. No one, including her mother had suspected that she was pregnant, and I suppose being immature and fearful she just wanted to dispose of the child. So it, along with the bloody towels, went into a plastic trash bag and set outside for pickup the next day. Fortunately a woman out walking her dog heard the infant's cries from inside the garbage bag and rescued the baby and took it to a neighbour's home to call 911. The mother was also located and taken to hospital and for a brief time, mother and child were reunited. "She grabbed the child's hand and held it, and realized there was a human life there", said Det. Rene Lafreniere.1

I made an exciting discovery yesterday. I got so excited about it I called my husband into the office so I could show him. He smiled indulgently but looked like he thought I was overreacting just a bit. I've been critiquing and editing manuscripts for writers for some time. I would usually do the edits on a hard copy of the manuscript, then transfer them onto the computer and send the finished product to the writer. The task was laborious since it is important for the writer to see the changes I make and in some cases, understand my reasoning. I used the highlight feature as well as the font colour feature on the computer, making the changes as I went, then highlighting and putting comments in red. This required continually clicking buttons and using the mouse.

Life is not a 'bowl of cherries' - far from it. Sometimes it's the pits, but not the cherry itself. Life has a 'flavor' all it's own, just like the cherry, and it's not always sweet. Sometimes we expect too much out of life and it doesn't always deliver to us what we expected or what we truly wanted. Things don't always go as planned or they aren't always as they have seemed. You might have a 'crushed cherry' instead of the sweet, firm 'fruit of life' that you expected to have.

God has always kept His promises to me--with many a surprising twist or turn along the way. An unexpected vacation to change my life. A career to exceed my plans. A loving husband to fulfill my dreams. Peace in fear, hope in despair, light in darkness--surprises of love you receive when Christ is your Savior and Lord.
Sometimes God's surprises come in little packages.. red-faced, screaming bundles of joy, and that's where my story begins...

For more than half a century NASCAR drivers and fans have planned their Labor Day weekend around the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. No more. This week NASCAR started what it hopes will become a new tradition. California Speedway's 2-mile oval is the new venue for Labor Day racing.
Long time race fans lament it will never be the same. Three-time Southern 500 winner Bill Elliott felt a little sadness in the change, but was happy to start third in the first Labor Day race in Fontana.
