"Be still, and know that I am God."
- Psalm 46:10
The Psalmist contemplates turbulence in nature and violence among men:
He remains unmoved and is neither fearful or resentful. He as been in
the holy place of the Most High. There he receives a fresh vision of
God, of His glorious majesty and power. With quiet confidence he sings:
"God is our Refuge and Strength."
Martin Luther loved this Psalm. It fortified his faith; it gave courage
and comfort to his heart in the hard battles of the Reformation. On it
he based his "A Mighty Fortress."

Again there is desolation in the earth; a world away war is raging such as history has not known. God's children suffer with the ungodly. The agonies of the wounded and dying, the exposure and hunger of the homeless, the cries of starving and orphaned children, the tears of bereft wives, mothers etc praying for loved ones far away fighting for this country, these are but a part of the misery and sorrow now filling the earth. Is God just? Does He not care? Can He do nothing about it? "Be still!" says God. We must steal away from the noise and confusion of earth, from the Babel of men's opinions, to be alone with God in the sanctuary. In His Word we shall hear the voice of His holiness, punishing men for their iniquities. We shall hear also the voice of His grace, announcing mercy and forgiveness through Christ and His cross.
Christian friends, let us pray that we may ever have the grace to be still and rest our all in the compassionate and tender hands of our Father,God.
Casting all your care upon Him
Sink into His blessed will;
While He folds you to His bosom
Sweetly whisp'ring, "Peace be still."
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - The secret of peace is the constant reference of all things to the care of God.
