This statement is the very heart of the Gospel. Without it there is no
real Gospel and no good news. This statement is faithful saying, it may
be relied upon as true; we are safe in putting faith into this
declaration. the Holy Spirit moved the Apostle to write these words.
Jesus made the same declaration: "The Son of Man is come to seek and to
save that which was lost." And what Jesus said, that He performed in
His sinless life and in His vicarious death.
This saying deserves to be received and believed by . . .

This saying deserves to be received and believed by all, because all need this declaration for the comfort of their immortal souls. Since all men are sinners, since none can save himself, all need a Savior. This is a glorious Gospel. It is also a sad remembrance made by St Paul: "Of whom I am chief." With sincere faith, genuine humility, and deep gratitude may we also sing and say: "Chief of sinners though I be, Jesus shed His blood for me."
