While researching the topic of salt, one article suggested that there are more than 14,000 uses for this common ingredient! Who knew??
The most common use that comes to mind is that of table salt. However, salt is referenced many times throughout Scripture as a preserver, a component in healing, and a valuable ingredient to enhance the flavour of food.
The Apostle Paul refers to salt as he encourages Christians to let our words be such that they will be palatable to the listener. “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4: 5,6).
A dash of salt added to water in a flower vase will keep cut flowers fresh longer. As Christians, we should be like a breath of fresh air to the people we interact with, or as Scripture beautifully puts it, “the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2:15).
Salt can be used to clean and disinfect. Try rubbing your cutting board with a damp cloth dipped in salt to make the board lighter and brighter. Salt makes things clean and bright! No wonder Jesus referenced salt and light in combination in one of His most powerful teachings. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world …” (Matthew 5: 13, 14a).
So, let’s flavour this world with goodness and shine brightly with the love of Jesus. As the sun sinks beneath the horizon and the world becomes increasingly dark, we can take heart because God’s light shines best in the dark. Whoever follows Jesus will never walk in darkness. Christ's followers are meant to be a beacon of light, illuminating God’s truth as we add just the right flavour to enhance the message.
So, let’s “Behave the Gospel” and “Stay Salty and Shine Bright” so that the world may know Jesus.
